Springbok winger Makazole Mapimpi demonstrated one of the perils of live TV, as he blurted out an F-bomb during a press-conference at OR Tambo International airport on Tuesday.

Rousing welcome for victorious Boks

The Rugby World Cup winners touched down in Johannesburg late in the afternoon, and the speedster was one of the first to arrive.

With coach Rassie Erasmus and captain Siya Kolisi due to arrive a little later after being held up in Sydney, the scheduled media conference still went ahead after the men in green were greeted by throngs of cheering fans.

Mapimpi, whose celebrity experienced a meteoric rise throughout the duration of the tournament in Japan, was one of the first in front of the cameras.

Having been instrumental in helping South Africa secure a third World Cup title, he was quizzed on when it sunk in that the Boks had claimed the big prize.

He expressed his disbelief in perhaps the most colourful way, dropping the F-bomb, much to the visible embarrassment of Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa, who was sitting to his right during the live broadcast.

Mapimpi finished the tournament as the second-leading try scorer after crossing over the whitewash six times, just one behind Wales’ Josh Adams.

His most important score was undoubtedly his last of the competition, as he provided the Springboks’ first-ever try in a Rugby World Cup final, helping them pull away from England end route to a convincing 32-12 win.

The winger’s tally also saw him fall just two short of the tournament record in terms of tries scored, which is shared by countryman Bryan Habana and All Blacks legend Jonah Lomu.

Festive atmosphere as RWC champions arrive at OR Tambo

Mapimpi, along with the likes of Elton Jantjies and Faf de Klerk were among the first group of Springboks to receive a heroes welcome at OR Tambo International airport.

Erasmus and Kolisi, together with vice-captain Handre Pollard are due to land just after 19:00.
