Tour de France 2019 – Stage 16: Geraint Thomas crash [video]

Defending Tour de France champion, Geraint Thomas, crashed on Stage 16 of the 2019 Tour de France on Tuesday. The Briton took a sharp corner awkwardly and tumbled in the peloton.

Thomas got back on the bike and immediately resumed the race immediately, though. Well, after a bike change anyway.

The extent of his injuries – or what exactly might have caused the fall – wasn’t immediately clear. However, superficially anyway, it looked like Thomas sustained only a few cuts and bruises.

He was later seen pouring disinfectant over his wounds, but kept pedalling on Tuesday’s stage.

Tuesday saw the 2019 Tour de France resumed after its second rest day. Thomas and his challengers for ultimate victory have been braced for a head-on collision with a heatwave bearing temperatures of 40 degrees Celsius and above over the next three days.

That coincides with three mountain stages in the Alps that test top riders at the best of times but will probe the outer limits of endurance in a heatwave.

Cycling fans worldwide and especially in France are transfixed by the 21-day Tour this year with two Frenchman in the victory frame ahead of Sunday’s grandstand finish along the Champs-Elysees in Paris.

Julian Alaphilippe holds the leader’s yellow jersey and his compatriot Thibaut Pinot sits firmly in the running to wrestle the title from defending champion Thomas with six stages remaining.

Thomas has already complained of overheating on a stage last week. But now he insists that he has no fear of temperatures soaring beyond anything experienced on the Tour so far.

The 2019 Tour de France is living up to its billing as being one of the most exciting ones in recent memory. After a gruelling few days in the mountains and a most welcome rest day, business resumes and Geriant Thomas is expected to launch a staunch title defence.

Julian Alaphilippe, somewhat beyond all expectations, has managed to cling onto the yellow jersey despite looking cooked on more than one occasion.

The first day back after the break is nice and flat, so the Frenchman might use this to give whatever he has left to hold on just a little while longer.

Or, he might be over it and resign himself to losing time, seeing as this has already gone beyond his wildest dreams.
