Surrey Stars name Proteas trio as overseas professionals

Proteas Women stars Marizanne Kapp, Lizelle Lee and Dane van Niekerk will turn out for the Surrey Stars in the Kia Super League T20 Competition.

All three were part of the Stars squad that won the tournament last season under the guidance of skipper Nat Sciver.

Lee made a particular impact last time out whacking 352 runs across 11 innings including a century in the final against Loughborough Lightning.

Married couple Kapp and van Niekerk took 24 wickets between them last time out with the latter caliming 13 scalps to be the team’s leading wicket-taker. Van Niekerk also made some handy contributions with the bat.

South Africa does not have a women’s T20 League and the experienced gained by three of the Proteas top players will no doubt prove invaluable.

All three featured in the recent bilateral series against Sri Lanka and Pakistan and should be ready to hit the ground running at the Oval.

Surrey welcomes back Proteas trio

On their return to the Surrey Stars, Head Coach Richard Bedbrook said: “I’m delighted that Marizanne, Lizelle and Dane will all be returning for this year’s Kia Super League. Not only did all three complement the skill set of our county and international players excellently, they were integral in the positive attitude of the squad throughout last year’s successful competition.

“We’re all looking forward to welcoming them back into the fold as we attempt to retain our trophy in the tournament’s final season.”

The Super League features six franchise teams, partnered with a variety of county teams, boards and universities, and was envisaged as a means to bridge the gap between amateur domestic women’s cricket and the increasingly professional international game.

The Surrey Stars begin their title defence against Yorkshire Diamonds at Headingley in Leeds on Tuesday 6 August with their first home fixture against Lancashire Thunder just two days later scheduled to be played at Guildford.
