Orlando Pirates: Makaringe feels he is among South Africa’s best

Orlando Pirates new signing Fortune Makaringe says that the club’s acquisition of his services let him know he is among SA’s best players.

Having seen Pirates bring in a top-quality group of players Makaringe feels that his presence in the squad alone is a testament to where he is at as a footballer.

Without Makaringe, Maritzburg United would almost certainly not be in the PSL this season and Pirates quickly swooped for the attacking midfielder who began his professional career in Soweto with Swallows.

Makaringe feels like he is part of something special at Orlando Pirates and will be able to add quality to the squad and make an immediate impact. The 26-year-old is also eager to grow and learn from the Pirates technical team and the rest of the squad.

“Coming here, I knew Pirates have been doing well, so I’m part of the continuity, which is something that’s very important – I think the coach [Milutin Sredojevic] mentioned that,” said Makaringe.

“Each and every player that the club has signed, they knew that they would be part of the puzzle, so with me coming in here I know I’m going to play alongside the best footballers in this country.

“So, this makes me one of the best footballers in this country, by learning from them as well as the technical team.”

Will Fortune favour Orlando Pirates.

Makaringe hopes to prove that he is aptly named by helping Orlando Pirates end a trophy drought that has now stretched to five years.

“With that said, I believe coming in here as Fortune, I’ll actually add up to those fortunes and get a title,” he stated.

“Because to be a legend at a club like Pirates you need to win titles – it’s judged by how many championships you brought to the team.

“So, I’m hoping, and I believe that with the knowledge that I’m grasping from everyone in this team, I’ll be ready when my time comes to play and contribute to lifting that first title [in five years].”

Makaringe took a knock in the latter stages of the Carling Black Label Cup but is expected to be fit to be in contention to face Bloemfontein Celtic in the opening game of the season this weekend.
