Orlando Pirates: Buccaneers XI remains steady in CBL cup voting

Orlando Pirates starting XI for the Carling Black Label Cup is taking shape with the majority of Bucs fans likely to be reasonably happy with the look of the team.

Barring injury or a late flurry of votes for some of the less popular members of the Pirates squad, the playing XI seems set in stone.

Since our last update to the CBL cup voting Pirates’ fan favourites have entrenched their positions in the lineup.

Despite rumours of a transfer to Egyptian heavy-hitters Al Ahly, Justin Shonga remains the most popular of the Sea Robbers players ahead of Zambian compatriot and strike partner Augustine Mulenga.

After the Zambian pairing Goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo, who had his first season with Pirates marred by injury, has garnered the next highest number of votes. Khuzwayo comfortably leads the voting for stoppers ahead of Siyabonga Mpontshane, Wayne Sandilands and Joris Delle. Mpontshane in second place has gathered over 20,000 less votes than Khuzwayo.

In midfield it is no surprise to see the man who vanquished the Pharaohs showing great popularity among the Bucs faithful. Thembinkosi Lorch still leads the way having picked up over 21,000 votes by lunchtime on Friday 19 July. Lorch and defender Innocent Maela have been given some time off by the club after their Afcon exertions but should be fit to take to the FNB Stadium on 27 July in front of a sold-out crowd.

The rest of the midfield is made up of Pirates regulars Vincent Pule, Luvoyo Memela and Ben Motshwari. Fans have not been able to find a place in their teams for deep-lying playmaker Xola Mlambo.

Club captain Happy Jele currently stands as the most popular defender in the squad but his position as skipper of the side is not set in stone. Fans also have the opportunity to vote to institute two of six prospective game-changers. As things stand fans are voting to be able to choose each team’s skipper and select the man of the match via twitter. There are six game-changing options for fans to vote on including fitting the ref with a microphone, rolling subs, sin-bins for yellow cards and substitutes chosen by social media.
