On this day in South African sports history – 6 August

On this day in 1966, Mohammad Ali knocked out Brian London in round 3 at Earl’s Court in London to retain his undisputed world heavyweight title.

In South African sports history on this day the Springboks won the first Test of a series against the British Lions for the first time ever.

On this day in SA sport – 6 August

1910 – The South African rugby team beats a British team 14-10 in the first Test of the series at Ellis Park. South Africa would win the series 2-1.

1938 – The Springboks beat the British Lions 26-12 in the first test of the series. S.C. Louw scores the 100th Springbok Test try.

1955 – The Springboks suffer a narrow defeat to the British Lions, going down 22-23 at Ellis park after Jack van der Schyff missed a critical goal kick.

1972 – South African golfer Gary Player wins his second PGA Championship with a two-stroke victory over Jim Jamieson and Tommy Aaron. It was the sixth major of his career.

1994 – Peter Kirsten scored his first and only Test century against England at Headingley on this day in 1994.

1994 – The Springboks draw the third Test of their tour to New Zealand 18-18. The All Blacks had already clinched three-match series by winning the first two Tests.

1998 – England batsman Mark Butcher scored his maiden Test Hundred against the Proteas at Headingley on this day. England won the Test by just 23 runs and took the series 2-1.

2005 – Roland Schoeman wins the Men’s 100-metre butterfly at the ConocoPhillips National Championship at the William J. Woollett Aquatic Center in Irvine, California.

2005 – The Springboks beat the All Blacks 22-16 at Newlands in Cape Town in a Tri-Nations match.

2016 – Banyana Banyana lose 0-2 to China at the Rio Olympics in a Group stage match.
