The appropriately named Ultimate CF Evo Disc features some of the most advanced carbon-fibre construction in the cycling industry and is the Canyon brand’s latest halo bike.
Canyon is a large German cycling company which sells direct to consumers.
In 2018 it established an official South
African presence too and the company’s latest product is an incredibly light
carbon road bike.
Using a combination of high-modulus and
high-tension carbon-fibres, Canyon’s technicians have expertly shaped and
engineered the Ultimate CF Evo’s structure.
Claimed weights are incredibly low, with
Canyon registering the frame at only 641g and its matching fork at 285g.
The obsessive weight-saving contributes to a complete bike which weighs 5.99kg. Steel screws are replaced with lighter titanium and the wheel axles are aluminium.
Canyon also produces its own one-piece
stem-handlebar, from carbon-fibre, and most of the Ultimate CF Evo’s other
components are from boutique suppliers.
Its seat is a 61g Selle Italia SLR C59 and although it features carbon construction instead of traditional material padding, the ergonomic shape guarantees comfort.
A notable safety upgrades with disc brakes
The bike’s shifting is completely
electronic, promising hundreds of kilometres of hassle-free riding, thanks to SRAM’s
RED eTap AXS system.
Beyond its innovative structure and durably
efficient electronic shifting, the Ultimate CF Evo’s greatest appeal are those
disc brakes. Canyon has recognised the recent trend from rim- to disc brakes in
road bike design as having value in both safety and performance for its riders.
Disc brakes offer superior stopping power,
better modulation and work without notable performance degradation on wet roads,
or in rain. Traditional rim brakes, by comparison, can suffer unpredictable performance
in wet conditions.
Cognisant of sizing issues and unwilling to
exclude any of its potential customers from owning an Ultimate CF Evo Disc, Canyon’s
latest road bike is available in seven sizes. Price positioning for the
Ultimate CF Evo Disc is R145 000.
