Henri Giscard d’Estaing, President of Club Med with the support of esteemed Mauritian dignitaries and more than 400 guests from 20 countries around the world, recently inaugurated the Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers resort in Mauritius. The resort underwent renovations and extensions totaling 42 million Euros (in partnership with COFIVRA, the owner of the resort) over a period of five months in 2018. This revamp, which mobilised many Mauritian companies, has made this resort the flagship of Club Med in Mauritius.
During the inauguration event, which was a festive, global event; elected officials, media personalities, partners, investors, artists and journalists from around the world discovered the new experiences offered to guests. Jo-Ann Strauss, Maps Maponyane, Melinda Bam, Adriaan Bergh, Basetsana Kumalo and Siba Mtongana were among some of the familiar faces from South Africa who joined in on the multi-cultural celebration.
Investment into Mauritius
A firm believer that in terms of the South African market, Mauritius is a key destination worth investing in and aware of the responsibility brands have to the communities they are based in, the work by Club Med on this resort strengthens the already solid relationship between Mauritius and Club Med. This relationship is characterised by the employment of nearly 1,000 Mauritians in the resorts, and the partnership established between Club Med and two Mauritian hotel management schools whereby each year Club Med Mauritian resorts integrate interns from these schools.
The annual activity of Club Med’s resorts in Mauritius represents an important windfall for the local economy by generating direct jobs for over 500 Mauritians – more than 50% of GOs (Gentils Organisateurs) and GEs (Gentils Employés) at Club Med are local staff. Added to this, indirect jobs are also generated as many activities are contracted out to nearly 200 local service providers, bringing in significant local economic benefits.
Since the opening of La Pointe aux Canonniers on a preserved site in Grand Bay in 1973, Club Med has continued to invest in Mauritius with the opening of the La Plantation d’Albion resort in 2007, followed by the opening of the Villas d’Albion in 2010 – both of which form part of Club Med’s Exclusive Collection. With its new structures, the resort contributes to fully reinforce Mauritius’s prestige and attractiveness on an international scale.
