South African Garden Day is a day to toss down the spade, invite family and friends around, kick back and celebrate in the garden. Fitting then, that on that day, Sunday 20 October, at 13H30 for 14h00, The Cellars-Hohenort will mark high spring with its inaugural Rose Garden Party. Guests are invited to dress all white with a touch of rose. Think buttonhole roses, pocket posies, rose-patterned accessories, all while listening to live instrumentals in the majestic scenery of the Hohenort Lawn at The Cellars-Hohenort.

You’ll be welcomed with a rose-coloured cocktail made with Copeland Rum (the new industry It liquor) and Warwick Rosé (a perennially fashionable day-time drink). Also part of the proceedings will be the launch of Copeland’s new Gin in South Africa. What better way to commemorate the start of the celebratory season and the beauty of gardens than with beautifully crafted G&Ts on the lawn? Artisan distiller and owner of Copeland Rum, James Copeland will be sharing some insight into pairing and mixing with Copeland Rum & Gin, with Warwick Rosé and even dehydrated rose petals from Ludwig Roses.

Guests will be able to take a little bit of the experience home with them when they leave. Rose-lovers in particular will be thrilled to discover that as part of the festivities, they will go home with a Liz McGrath rose bush from arguably the leading expert on rose care in South Africa – Ludwig’s Roses. Anja Taschner, the director of Ludwig Roses will be the guest of honour and speaker at the event.

Included in your ticket cost are refreshing welcome drinks, a buffet-style rose coloured and flavoured high tea on the lawns that includes tea and coffee, at R 495 per person. This all contributes towards a worthy cause, with a portion of the proceeds going to St. Luke’s Hospice.

The Cellars-Hohenort, part of The Liz McGrath Collection, is a Constantia hotel whose appeal is inextricable from its setting. A heritage building, set amongst gardens that are as romantic as they are magnificent, it’s a venue that calls to mind a slower-paced time and more elegant era, and celebrates the simple pleasures to be found spending time in nature.

Roses in particular are one of the garden’s crowning glories, and the hotel has three centuries of history where they’re concerned. Throughout its existence since the 17th century (the property once formed part of a farm), the grounds have played host to fruit, vines, vegetables and flowers. It was in the hotel’s very environs that a former owner of the Cellars hybridised the rose “Chris Barnard”, named after the pioneering, world-famous heart surgeon.

More recently however, it was Liz McGrath’s 20-year vision for the property that saw the development of the magnificent rose garden – home to 2 500 roses, including the Liz McGrath Rose, which was hybridised in 2003 to commemorate the late owner’s 80th birthday, and the Relais & Châteaux Rose, named to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the collective in 2013.
