Thousands of flowers welcome spring in Namaqualand

SABC News Flowers - Thousands of flowers welcome spring in Namaqualand

It’s Spring day and the Namaqualand did not disappoint. Thousands of flowers have exploded on the landscape following the good rains in late July.

An explosion of colour to usher in the change of season while there’s still a chill in the air. The yellow, white, orange and purple flowers make a spring stroll worthwhile. The beauty brings a song to the hearts of many.

2019’s spectacle has even surprised the locals as the area is in the grip of a devastating drought. While the rain was too little to break the drought, it was enough to bring about the explosion of colour.

Local resident Donovan Koopman says that the flowers attract tourists to the area.

The flowers invade every nook and cranny. They can be spotted in fields and on pavements from the Western Cape right through to Namibia.

“All good things come to an end, however, and these carpets of flowers will disappear in the next few weeks. But if good rains fall at the right time in 2020, they’ll be back in full bloom.
