Didiza calls for change when raising both girls, boys

SABC News Thoko Didiza - Didiza calls for change when raising both girls, boys

Acting Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture, Thoko Didiza, says there needs to be a change in attitudes and cultural practises when it comes to raising both girls and boys.

She was speaking on the sidelines of the main event of Women’s Day Celebrations at Vryburg in North West.

Didiza says certain behaviours need to be unlearned.

“Sometimes when we raise children, we will say boys don’t cry, how else do they express their frustration and anger and we say women are supposed to be in the kitchen. Some of these things that at times just come normally because of our socialisation are the things that we must learn.”

“So that from an early age we start to create a culture of respect among men and women. A culture of accepting that women can also participate in other spaces in terms of their employment and their choices must be respected,” explains Didiza.

Meanwhile, most of the women who are attending the main event of the National Women’s Day Celebrations at Vryburg in the North West, have appealed to government to double its efforts in dealing with gender based violence.
